Overview
The Tropicana Joint Venture in Western Australia was formed in 2002 between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% and manager) and IGO Limited (30%). On 13 April 2021, IGO announced it had entered into a binding agreement with Regis Resources Limited for the sale of its 30% interest in the Tropicana Joint Venture for A$903 million. The sale was finalised on 31 May 2021. The Tropicana discovery was made in August 2005, 330 kilometres east-northeast of the town of Kalgoorlie on the western edge of the Great Victoria Desert in an area not previously thought to be prospective for gold. Located at the northern end of an extensive tenement package held by the Joint Venture along the ancient collision zone between the Yilgarn Craton and the Albany-Fraser Province, the discovery signalled the identification of a new gold province. The JV partners began gold production at Tropicana in September 2013.
